Solutions for improving metal waste separation: a competition
In the Circularity to the Circular Economy competition, Syklo is searching for a solution to advance metal waste separation and to obtain purer metal fractions from waste of different qualities. The competition is carried out by the LIKE circular economy cluster coordinated by BusinessOulu. The competition aims to improve the ability of small and medium-sized companies to gain visibility for their new circular economy solutions and thus boost their abilities to compete in the growing market.
The circular economy cluster also aims to introduce scalable circular economy solutions that deliver emission reductions to the sector.
Syklo is using the competition to search for a solution to advance metal waste separation
How should the separation of metal waste be advanced and the value of metal fractions be increased? We are offering the best solution an opportunity to partake in a joint piloting venture with Syklo Oy!
Many loads of waste contain large amounts of metals. Spring mattresses are an example of this: There are no cost-effective solutions for separating their springs. There are also many metals in construction waste.
Often, magnetic and non-magnetic metals can be separated well in waste separation plants, but by improving the purity of the metals, their recycling potential can be significantly improved.
We are looking for an innovative solution that either advances the separation of metals or produces a cleaner metal distribution.
The solution we are looking for:
- is innovative, pilot-ready and can be widely applied in Finland
- promotes the circular economy and enables emission reductions
- is an organization with a Finnish Business ID
The award: piloting (max. EUR 15,000)
The best ideas will get to pitch their solutions in the KiertotalousAreena (Circular economy arena) event that will take place on 24 May.
The winning solution will be piloted in a real operational environment together with Syklo Oy in the autumn of 2023.
How can I participate?
The competition is carried out as competitive tendering and is open to submissions from 2 March 2023 to 16 April 2023.
Registration is no longer open
What is the Circularity to the Circular Economy challenge prize?
The Circularity to the Circular Economy challenge prize is organised by the LIKE circular economy cluster coordinated by BusinessOulu. The circular economy cluster is funded by the City of Oulu and the Council of Oulu Region.
The results of the pilots carried out in the Circularity to the Circular Economy competition will become public after the competition because they will receive public funding. The competition aims to improve the visibility of small and medium-sized companies and to produce new references for their circular economy solutions and thus boost their abilities to compete in the growing market. The competition also aims to introduce scalable circular economy solutions that deliver emission reductions to the sector.
Separation of metal waste at Syklo Oy currently
Syklo Oy’s waste sorting plant in Rusko already separates commercial and industrial waste, from which the modern sorting equipment enables the careful separation of various fines. We use equipment for the separation and capture of magnetic and non-magnetic metals from the waste stream, for example. The metals are also separated from the waste stream by eddy current separators.

Circular economy company Syklo’s operations in brief
- Syklo’s circular economy system consists of Syklo’s waste sorting plant in Rusko, Oulu, the production of waste solutions for the ecopower plant in Laanila, Oulu, and the development of the reuse of ashes and cinder together with the help of our partner network.
- Syklo’s waste treatment service receives a total of 260,000 tonnes of waste annually.
- The highly automated sorting plant in Rusko, Oulu, treats 100,000 tonnes of waste per year. The waste volume is composed of construction and demolition waste, and commercial and industrial waste.
- At the sorting plant, waste is sorted for recyclable raw materials and about 40–50% of the waste is processed into Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF). Only 5–20% of the non-recyclable waste in the sorting plant is mass incinerated. Practically no waste remains to be disposed of, as all of it is recovered.
